2 years at "Reality Labs", my glimpse into the future

Project:
Prototyping and MR vision
In 2020, the early success of my home-mapping mixed reality application attracted attention from the Mixed Reality team at Oculus (Meta). Internal research aligned closely with work I had already released publicly, including multiplayer experiences that allowed users to visit one another’s physical spaces through augmented environments.

Meta initially approached me in 2021, but I declined due to my commitment to Press Play. I accepted a second invitation in 2022. Drawing on my background as both a performing artist and a developer—with 12 released applications and direct engagement with early adopters—I was given broad autonomy to pursue forward-looking research.

Over two years, I contributed to the creation and shipment of the Mixed Reality Utility Kit, significantly lowering barriers for developers building spatially adaptive applications. I also actively contributed to internal discourse around generative AI, large language models, augmented reality glasses, telepresence, and the future of social interaction.

Despite representing a significant shift from performance, the work felt deeply familiar: a collaborative environment of world-class practitioners collectively attempting to realise ideas that previously seemed impossible.
